Research interests
Thesis: Timing and magnitude of CO2 uptake by ocean crust through seawater interaction and carbonate veining.
Seawater circulation through the ocean crust has profound effects on both the physical and chemical properties of the oceanic crust. Mineral precipitation is also of major importance from a chemical perception: carbonates are forming most abundantly during low-temperature alteration, changing the overall composition of the oceanic lithosphere and making seawater-related alteration of oceanic crust a significant component of the global carbon cycle. Element transfer between seawater and rocks of the oceanic crust has been quantified by different authors using either the rock record or ridge flank fluid compositions. A more integrative approach for estimating chemical exchange budgets is analysing vein minerals from basaltic crust and using their composition to reconstruct element ratios of the seawater-derived fluid from which they precipitated.
We investigated carbonate veins from a large number of IODP cores,
- we logged the carbonate abundance to give an estimation about how exceedingly the ocean crust act as a sink for CO2,
- on the one hand carbonate veins, which show no interaction with the basement, are good indicators for past seawater composition,
- on the other hand, carbonate veins can be used to understand chemical exchange processes between seawater and the ocean crust.
Expedition 330 Louisville Seamount Chain
Besides the main goal of this cruise was to get more information about hotspot motion and evolution of magmatic systems, we are interested in secondary minerals precipitating during alteration of the seamounts and we want to get information about what they tell us about the processes and magnitudes of chemical exchange between seawater and the basement during seamount evolution. We want to
- determining the extent of carbonate veining,
- estimating formation conditions of vein minerals (carbonates, zeolites, clay minerals) from compositional and isotopic characteristics. In cooperation with Fabien Deschamps, Université de Montpellier, France
- examining the timing, sequence, and chemical effects of both subaerial weathering and submarine alteration. In cooperation with Erdenesaikhan Ganbat, Tohoku University, Japan,
- documenting the extent and type of microbial colonization of the rocks. In cooperation with Louise Anderson University of Leicester.
