Current research project

DFG funded research post-IODP Cruise Expedition 385

I am currently investigating the process of magma-sediment interplay and the longevity of shallow hydrothermal systems powered by shallow off-axis sill intrusions in the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. These systems hold many keys to answer fundamental questions related to the role of rift magmatism in the global carbon cycle, climate change and how life may bloom during a large rifting event.

This research incorporates newly collected petrophysical data from the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 385 (IODP Exp. 385) to study and quantify, the multifold implications of the magma-sediment mingling process in a young rifted basin.

Other projects

  • Natural carbonation processes within basaltic magma upon emplacement (University of Bremen, Germany; MARUM in Bremen, Germany; University of Oslo, Norway)
  • Offshore Carbon Capture and Sequestration – CCS in basalts (University of Bremen, DE; MARUM in Bremen, Germany; University of Oslo, Norway; GEOMAR in Kiel, France)

  • Sill intrusion as capacitor for petroleum migration and storage (University of Bremen, Germany; University of Oslo, Norway)
  • Karoo LIP volcanism – geochemistry and geochronology (University of Bremen, Germany; University of Pretoria, South Africa; University of Göttingen, Germany)
